Travelling with a little one can be challenging. Who am I kidding? It is challenging! Managing nap schedules, avoiding meltdowns, finding kid-friendly places along with other "nuances" make it seem getting away for a vacation with a little one is not worth the hassle. From my personal experience, I beg to differ as travel has benefits for kids and families that make it all worthwhile. CONVENIENCE typically is key- and an all inclusive resort has been our family's "bohemian rhapsody" that has worked for us. A resort and/or cruise can eliminate daily decision making that can cause conflict.
Thinking about visiting an all inclusive resort with your little one? Here are some tips and considerations for a HAPPY getaway for everyone.
Tip #1: CHOOSE BETTER FLIGHT TIMES
For shorter flight times such as visiting the Caribbean from Ontario, Canada, go earlier in the day. Children become tired and cranky later in the day. For long flights such as visiting Europe, aim for overnight flights so the child can rest and hopefully sleep. Remember: You may want to reserve seats close to the family washroom on the flight!
Tip#2: CHOOSE FAMILY-FRIENDLY RESORTS
Choose resorts that have change pads, are focused on diverse families, have babysitting/kids club options, have a Buffet option for Breakfast, Lunch AND Dinner, and pay a little extra for Oceanfront- You can take a sip as you watch the sun sink below the watery horizon while your children are napping...Make sure milk is available on site. You can ask the bar for milk for bottle/fridge in your room and/or bring formula with you. Remember: Ask for cots or cribs at time of booking as these are based on requests and availability. Also, a doctor on site is always a good idea!
Tip#3: BRING EXTRAS
Extra diapers/swim diapers/sunscreen/hat/outfits and clothes packed in zip lock bags/snacks/small portable containers (to put snacks in from the Buffet for beach/pool)/ stroller with canopy/milk or water bottle....It can be pricey to purchase some items while at the resort or they may not be available at all. A portable booster seat worked well for my child. At times, high chairs were limited!
Tip#4: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
When travelling with children, it is a good idea to consider travel insurance. For instance, your child can become sick whether at home or on vacation. My child was bitten by a fish when people decided to feed the fish near him! Remember: You can use alcohol to immediately disinfect cuts. I used tequila to disinfect my son's toe and headed over to the doctor's office! I made the right "call"!
